The new “star” in the field of antioxidant plants is the Acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee). This is a berry that grows naturally on  Acai palm trees in South America, sometimes called the Assai palm. It is a water loving type of palm tree that tends to flourish in low  lying tropical areas like swamps and along river banks. They are nice looking palms that grow between 45-90 feet in height,  depending on the variety. The berries are small, about the size of a grape. Like most palms, they fruit in clusters of 500 to 800  berries. The berries are a dark purple color.

The nutritional benefits of the Acai berry pigments are astounding. Not only does it possess more antioxidant properties than even  Blueberries, it is jam packed with vitamins, fiber and protein. As if that were not enough reason to buy Acai berry, it is also rich in  omega-3 fatty acids like virgin olive oil. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce harmful cholesterol. So what is the science versus the “hype”?  Why would you buy Acai berry? Let’s take a look. The antioxidant power of the Acai berries is found in the deep pigmentation of  the skin. These flavonoids are cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. Together they deliver three times the antioxidant  power of Blueberries, which in the not so distant past were considered the ultimate antioxidants.

A manufacturer of acai products states on its website that acai has three times the antioxidant strength of blueberries and eight times  that of strawberries. The likely source of such unusual antioxidant power would come from the dark blue pigments found in acai  berry skin – the large class of flavonoids called anthocyanins and particularly from two (cyanidin-3-glucoside and  cyanidin- 3- rutinoside), which are the main pigments isolated from the Acai berry . The University of Florida, considered one of the  top research labs on phytochemicals, determined that, in vitro, the Acai berry could induce apoptosis (quick death) of leukemia cells.  This research indicates that the anti-cancer effects of the Acai berry are certainly worth further study. Why buy Acai berry? With the  documentation already at hand, why would you not buy acai berrires?
